This was clearly intended to be a spectacle.ĭirector Joel Schumacher was clearly going for a Super Bowl type of showing from this with immaculate-looking set pieces to really on the late 19th-century aesthetic.Īttempting to go for a film that is visually stunning could have audiences overlook any performance in it because everyone just wants to look at the theatre or the Phantom’s lair underneath the theatre, but Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler absolutely killed their roles.īutler is very over-the-top in his singing. My main goal for this movie was seeing if I could stomach sitting through well-known actors (now, at least) mouthing songs that were pre-recorded, and I have to say I was decently surprised by the performances. However, I wanted to be more open-minded for this marathon and I previously knew of some songs from this musical. It’s one of the most cringe-inducing triggers I have.
Now, I haven’t seen the musical and I know the biggest complaints about this adaptation are that it tails off from the source material quite drastically, but I’m looking at this film strictly from the lens of it being its own movie. To be fair, Patrick Wilson, who’s appeared in a handful of films I’ve reviewed over the last two marathons, is one of the leads in the 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera and this has always been material I’ve wanted to watch because there are songs I enjoy from this musical.
